Lubanga Trial: Week 17 in Review
On Tuesday the trial resumed with a closed session as the witness who testified last week that hundreds of child soldiers were trained by the UPC under Lubanga’s command.
During the week, a former child soldier in the UPC testified that Lubanga came to visit the UPC training camps and when asked to describe how he was beaten the witness stated, “No, I can’t. I might have problems and get angry [if I talk about it].”
Judges rebuked prosecutors for not properly responding to “victims’ attorneys who want charges against Lubanga expanded to include sexual slavery and cruel treatment.” Judge Fulford stated “It would be helpful to us to have a substantive position set out…given this affects the very charges brought against the accused” and requested a “more complete response” by June 12.
